Scouts meet on Friday nights, between 7:30 and 9:30pm. 

Scouts are aged between 10½ and 14, and although many of our Scouts have come to us from Cubs, we also welcome anyone who is interested in what we do!

Whatever they like! Every term we ask our Scouts what activities and badges they want to do for the term and the volunteer team take these suggestions and work out a program, along with badgework and activities from across the Scouting program. 

In the Scout Section, Young People get the opportunity to build on the skills they have acquired in the two previous Sections and are given more responsibility for their own progress through Scouting. This doesn’t mean we drop them in at the deep end. Our experienced volunteer team is always on hand to help out and advise the Scouts to ensure they get as much out of Scouting as they can. Don’t worry if your Young Person hasn’t been a Beaver or Cub: they’ll soon pick up everything they need to know from their Patrol Leader and the other Scouts, and be able to play a full part in our adventures right from the start! We like to put the OUT into SCOUTING, and plan to be outdoors as much as possible, especially in the warmer months. Every year will see several opportunities for Scouts to go camping, from our annual Summer Camp to smaller weekend camps. Each year we also take part in Gwentrek, a hiking competition for Scouts from across Gwent – 2 nights of camping, 2 days of hiking, cooking, navigating (occasionally retracing your steps) and team work. For our older and more experienced Scouts they also have the opportunity to do this unaccompanied by any adults. 

Our top award, the Chief Scout’s Gold Award, is very much based on outdoor adventure, community involvement, and looking outwards, as well as trying new things. But most of all it is about self-development and gaining skills and attitudes that will help our Scouts now and in later life. Gaining the Chief Scout’s Gold Award is a challenge and one which will give your Scout a great sense of real achievement. 

Alongside the Chief Scout’s Gold Award and its associated Challenge Awards, we also have a wide range of Staged and Activity Badges.  These cover almost every hobby or interest you can imagine, from Street Sports to Survival Skills, from Meteorology to Martial Arts, and from Electronics to Entertainer, not to mention our Staged Badges that cover Camping, Emergency Aid and Music among others. We really do have something for everyone. We encourage our members to continue their Scouting outside of our regular meetings, with many of our badges achievable at home, or as part of any other activities or clubs they are involved with. 

We encourage Scouts to step out of their comfort zone in a controlled environment, and many are surprised at just what they can do when challenged. In the vast majority of cases, we find parents and carers are even more surprised at what their Young People are capable of! 

Lots of young people want to join Scouts and you might have to wait for a space to become available before your child can start their journey. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to contact us in addition to your child’s application. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure your young person has the best experience possible. 

On your child’s first night at Scouts, they’ll be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something they feel comfortable in (t-shirt, jogging bottoms, trainers etc).

Eventually, your child will need a Scout uniform to wear to meetings and on trips and nights away. Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no-one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of our Scout group.  

For Scouts, our uniform consists of a green shirt with badges sewn on and a coloured necker (scarf) which represents our Scout group.  Our necker at 1st Wentwood is an “Old Gold” colour, and is presented to your Scout when invested. Uniform can either be bought from the Scouts online shop https://shop.scouts.org.uk, Cardiff Scout shop, which can be visited in person, https://www.cardiffandvalescoutshop.co.uk, or there may be the opportunity to buy uniforms donated back to us, depending on availability. If you’re not sure where to start, adult volunteers can give you more information about what to buy and where to buy it – please ask!
