About Cubs
Cubs meet on Wednesday nights, between 6:30 and 8:00pm.
Cub Scouts are between the ages of 8 to 10 1/2 years old. Many of our current Cub Scouts have moved up from our Beaver colony, but we also have many Cubs who join us new to Scouting, it’s never too late to join and start your Scouting adventure.

The Cubs Volunteer team work to a 2 1/2 year plan which enables the Cubs to achieve the challenge badges required for their Chief Scout Silver Award. This is the highest award in the Cubs section and many of our Cubs transfer up to our Scout section proudly wearing their Chief Scout Silver Award badge on their uniform.
Cubs is about having lots of fun; trying lots of new things and developing skills you probably wouldn’t learn anywhere else. It’s about learning responsibility; having fun safely; stepping out of your ‘comfort-zone’ and respecting your surroundings. During a normal year, Cubs would be attending a camp, sleeping under canvas and learning how to cook. They also try lots of adventurous activities such as archery and Sailing – all under the watchful eye of qualified volunteers and instructors. We always teach our Cubs the knowledge and respect for the equipment they are using and the safety of others around them.
But it’s not all about being outdoors; we also work towards lots of varied staged and activity badges and challenge awards, across the wide range of topics available from Artist to Global Issues to Space and so many more! There will always be a lot of sewing of badges to do, and Cubs can also achieve some of their badges at home.
At 1st Wentwood Scout Group, we are very passionate about Youth-Led Scouting – which means Leaders finding out what the Young People want to do, and making it happen. Our Cubs are always engaged with our programme, especially when they help to shape it.
And of course there are always lots of games to play at each session – it’s not always about the badgework!
How to Join
How to Join
Lots of young people want to join Cubs and you might have to wait for a space to become available before your child can start their journey. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to contact us in addition to your child’s application. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure your young person has the best experience possible.
On your child’s first night at Cubs, they’ll be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something they feel comfortable in (t-shirt, jogging bottoms, trainers etc)
Eventually, after a few weeks, your child will need a Cub uniform to wear to meetings and on trips and nights away. Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no-one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of our Cub Pack. It also gives them a place to show off all the Cub badges they will earn (spoiler – there will be LOTS!!)
For Cubs, our uniform consists of a green Cub sweatshirt with badges sewn on and a coloured necker (scarf) which represents our Scout group. Our necker at 1st Wentwood is an “Old Gold” colour, and is presented to your Cub Scout when invested. Uniform can either be bought from the Scouts online shop https://shop.scouts.org.uk, Cardiff Scout shop, which can be visited in person, https://www.cardiffandvalescoutshop.co.uk, or there may be the opportunity to buy uniforms donated back to us, depending on availability. If you’re not sure where to start, adult volunteers can give you more information about what to buy and where to buy it – please ask!

How does it work? How do you enter the details of what your child has been up to?
Getting started is easy! Rainy day? School holiday? Looking for a challenge? There’s no reason not to take part and try something new. Our Scouts at Home activities are designed to help young people continue their Scouting adventure wherever they are, while learning new skills, having fun, and working towards badges.
Simply log into OSM (you can find out more about the app here), go to Badges > Completable At Home. Choose a badge, and it's activity, complete it at home, and then tell us what your child has been up to by recording their achievements and uploading any videos or photos. It really is that simple!

For those of you that will need uniforms now or in the near future, please use the links below. We are a uniform organisation and all of our members are expected to wear uniforms.
If anyone is struggling to afford uniform please talk to us and we will do our best to find a solution that works for you. We sometimes have second hand uniforms that are available to purchase for reduced amounts.

There is no other uniform required and no need to purchase any other clothing or equipment unless you choose to do so.
We will supply the badges and neckerchief when the children are invested later in the year.
We also have our own branded polo shirts that are available to buy for either £11.00 (child) or £15.00 (adult) depending on size.
