About Beavers

Our Beaver Colony meets every Friday evening from 6:10 to 7:10pm.

Beaver Scouts are the youngest members of our Group, aged 6 to 8. Each week they enjoy a lively programme of games, crafts, challenges and adventures that help them grow in confidence, learn new skills and work towards their badges. Beavers are encouraged to try new things, make friends and begin their Scouting journey in a fun, supportive environment.

During term time, our Beaver Colony meets weekly for plenty of fun and activities. The Colony is organised into three Lodges: White, Maroon and Purple. The colour of each Beaver’s woggle shows which Lodge they belong to, and many games and activities take place within these Lodge groups. Beavers also have the chance to become Lodge Leaders, giving them extra responsibilities and opportunities to help others.

Our Beaver Volunteer team has put together a comprehensive 2 year program, which covers lots of the Challenge Awards and Staged and Activity badges the Beaver Scout needs to achieve to obtain the Chief Scout Bronze Award. This is the highest badge awarded to a Beaver Scout and we are always very proud when our Beavers move up to Cubs with it on their uniform! Being a Beaver Scout is about being the best you can be, trying new things and being kind and helpful. When your Beaver Scout is invested, they make a Promise to the Colony which is tailored to be inclusive, and receive their Membership badge and Group Necker.

How to Join

Lots of young people want to join Beavers and you might have to wait for a space to become available before your child can start their journey. If you have any questions about accessibility, it’s best to contact us in addition to your child’s application. By being upfront about additional needs from the start, parents/carers can work in partnership with local leaders to make sure your young person has the best experience possible.

On your child’s first night at Beavers, they’ll be taking part in lots of activities, and should just wear something they feel comfortable in (t-shirt, jogging bottoms, trainers etc)

Eventually, after a few weeks, your child will need a Beaver uniform to wear to meetings and on trips and nights away. Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means no-one feels uncomfortable or left out and helps everyone to feel a part of our Beaver Colony. It also gives them a place to show off all the Beaver badges they will earn (spoiler – there will be LOTS!!)

For Beavers, our uniform consists of a turquoise Beavers sweatshirt with badges sewn on and a coloured necker (scarf) which represents our Scout group. Our necker at 1st Wentwood is an “Old Gold” colour, and is presented to your Beaver Scout when invested. Uniform can either be bought from the Scouts online shop https://shop.scouts.org.uk, Cardiff Scout shop, which can be visited in person, https://www.cardiffandvalescoutshop.co.uk, or there may be the opportunity to buy uniforms donated back to us, depending on availability. If you’re not sure where to start, adult volunteers can give you more information about what to buy and where to buy it – please ask!

Badges at Home

How does it work? How do you enter the details of what your child has been up to?

Getting started is easy! Rainy day? School holiday? Looking for a challenge? There’s no reason not to take part and try something new. Our Scouts at Home activities are designed to help young people continue their Scouting adventure wherever they are, while learning new skills, having fun, and working towards badges.

Simply log into OSM (you can find out more about the app here), go to Badges > Completable At Home. Choose a badge, and it's activity, complete it at home, and then tell us what your child has been up to by recording their achievements and uploading any videos or photos. It really is that simple!

I need to buy uniform, where do I get it?

For those of you that will need uniforms now or in the near future, please use the links below. We are a uniform organisation and all of our members are expected to wear uniforms.

If anyone is struggling to afford uniform please talk to us and we will do our best to find a solution that works for you. We sometimes have second hand uniforms that are available to purchase for reduced amounts.

There is no other uniform required and no need to purchase any other clothing or equipment unless you choose to do so.

We will supply the badges and neckerchief when the children are invested later in the year.

We also have our own branded polo shirts that are available to buy for either £11.00 (child) or £15.00 (adult) depending on size.
